THE GETTY GALLERY 100

8th January 1951: Painters balance precariously on girders as they paint the Forth Railway Bridge which is over a mile long. The steel cantilever construction, at Queensferry in Lothian, was designed by Sir John Fowler and Sir Benjamin Baker to carry a double-track railway line and a road over the river. An extraordinary achievement in engineering, when completed in 1890 it was the longest bridge of its kind in the world.
