The work of Tom Butler resonates with animation, texture and graphics. His style of ‘busy mixed media’ is like a snapshot of City street life – a cacophony of colour and information which flickers and flashes in our field of vision. Working from a build-up of layered paints, Tom then applies areas of collage using magazine, newspaper and other printed materials. Sometimes, these components are random in their application – creating a sense of subliminal information sources – much in the way we absorb graphics in our everyday life. Seen close up or viewed from afar, Tom’s artworks are filled with fun and clever observation in which everyday nuances are described in photo-impressionistic style.
