The art of Basmala in Islamic calligraphy is portrayed in a contemporary style by renowned Iraqi born artist, Wissam Shawkat. The words Basmala ir Rahman ir Rahim are translated to mean in the name of God, the merciful and the compassionate. A recurring theme in many art forms of the region, the Basmala is beautiful expression of faith and is the phrase recited before each Sura (chapter) except for the ninth of the Quran. The Basmala has taken various artistic forms and calligraphers have competed for centuries to innovate and inspire. “in my Basmala calligraphic works, I am creating a new modern form that has not been approached before by the use of traditional script styles like Jali Diwani and my signature calligraphic style (Al Wissam) which I began in 2003”.
