The hand (khamsa), particularly the open right hand, is a sign of protection that also represents blessings, power, and strength. Seen in middle eastern and African cultures as a potent symbol, the hand has been used to decorate everyday items for many centuries. The hand can be depicted with the fingers spread apart to ward off evil, or as closed together to bring good luck. Artist James Dominé uses the symbol as the basis for colourful, contemporary and bright artworks in his series ‘Fatima Hand’. Overlaid onto simple Arabic inspired geometric patterns, the resultant artworks are complex and interwoven – full of vibrancy, and ‘positive energy’.
